Wastes
Pegatron's manufacturing is mainly assembly with minimal waste produced. The sources of Pegatron's industrial waste are mainly test materials for research and development, faulty raw materials, packaging materials and commodity wastes. We strive to ensure that these are properly stored, transported, recycled or disposed of to reduce the potential impact on the environment. Hazardous wastes are treated through physical or chemical disposal or recycling processes at third party licensed hazardous waste management facilities. Pegatron uses responsible and qualified recycling/ disposal vendors and works closely with them to raise the premiums generated from the recycled materials. To meet environmental protection goals, we strive to follow the sequence of reducing, reusing and recycling to handle industrial wastes.

Waste Classification
Pegatron classifies its wastes according to the definitions of the local Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. For example, in Taiwan , Pegatron's waste is classified into three categories:
  • Hazardous industrial waste: Hazardous or dangerous waste produced by the company in the concentrations and/or quantities that can affect human health or pollute the environment; such as waste solvent, soldering, printed circuit boards, cables, components, batteries, etc.
  • Recycled and reused industrial waste: Waste produced by the company but recyclable; such as metals, papers, cardboard, and polyester bottles
  • General industrial waste: Waste produced by the company other then the above two categories, which are non-hazardous and non-recyclable. For example, garbage, food wastes from kitchens, tissues and food packing bags, etc.
As Pegatron's main manufacturing process is assembly, all wastes produced by Pegatron are rarely harmful to the environment. Almost all wastes in the storage stage are categorized as general industrial waste instead of hazardous. Such items are categorized as hazardous only when handling them with a physical or chemical process.

Waste Management and Control System

To ensure that waste handling in the design, manufacture and repair processes is effective and legal, Pegatron has established a waste management and control system:

1. We have established "PF2-00010 Waste Control Management Procedure" to manage and control industrial     wastes . The contents can be found in "Operating Procedure & Responsibility", "Industrial Waste Handling     Process", "Special Personnel Appointment", "Storage management", "Audit" and "Abnormal Events     Handling".
2. We monitor and control all processes in handling wastes through ISO 14001 management system and     waste application web system to reduce possible environmental impacts.
3. We have developed an e-flow management system to monitor and control the review procedure of all     electronic products to be disposed and to enhance the reuse rate.
4. We also conduct non-scheduled audits to ensure that our contracted waste handling vendors fully comply     with local environmental laws and regulations.
5. We focus on enhancing the residual values of well classified and disposed wastes to obtain some rewards     from handling vendors and to improve the recycling rate; and furthermore, to reduce the impact on the     environment.
6. We endeavor to improve the reuse and recycling rate via continuous communication with handling vendors     and investigation of the recycling techniques.
7. We utilize "waste classification/sorting" to enhance the recycling rate and to reduce the qua n tity of     industrial wastes.
8. The principle means of waste disposal is through classifying and recycling. We break the wastes which can     not be recycled or reused by physical destruction and proceed to secondary recycling. Final disposal     wastes which can not be recycled are treated with incineration instead of using landfill space.

Waste Handing and Minimization
Pegatron's first priority in terms of waste handling is reuse. Parts that cannot be reused will be broken down or shredded and recycled as raw materials.

Incineration and landfill is our last option (except for kitchen waste and other organic/natural waste). Gradually reducing incineration percentages is one of Pegatron's goals for the coming years.
We also conduct waste minimization programs and encourage our employees to recycle waste actively so as to improve our recycling rate. Examples of waste handling and minimization initiatives for our key streams are discussed below:

  • Handling Hazardous Industrial Wastes

  • For Hazardous Industrial Wastes, Pegatron has contracted qualified and responsible recycling vendors to dispose of the wastes from design and manufacturing processes. This is undertaken in ways that are compliant with local regulations.
  • Handling Recycled and Reused Industrial Wastes

  • One way to reduce the wastes in factories is to return the packaging materials of raw materials back to vendors for them to reuse. In Pegatron's global factories, Harmful and Recycled and Reused Industrial Waste are managed by government-authorized third parties, and packing materials are returned to vendors as well. Almost all packaging materials are recycled by vendors.
  • Handling General Industrial Wastes

  • Pegatron's non-hazardous, non-recyclable waste is delivered to local government waste processing sites for incineration.
Kitchen wastes and other organic wastes produced by catering and employees are carefully sorted into edible and non-edible waste and these are delivered to nearby farms for animal feed or used as fertilizers.

Future Objectives and Challenges
Due to the expansion of the company in sales volume and employee numbers, it is inevitable that Pegatron's total waste volume will increase. This is a serious challenge for Pegatron in terms of waste management. Therefore, to ensure that all wastes in the company are handled legally, we are endeavoring to control and to increase the reusing rate of all items before disposing and to keep staff informed of the various waste classifications in Pegatron. In addition, we continually update and communicate relevant techniques with waste handling vendors to improve the recycling rate.
